You can go to Newport for the vineyards, the folk festivals, the sailing races and the nightlife, I don’t mean to offend, I like Newport too, but if I want things to slow down a bit, I go to Jamestown.

Until this summer, I’d only been in Jamestown for a day or an afternoon—either to dive, have dinner with friends, or stop for a bite to eat on the way home, and the Newport crowd took me to the bridge. Three days in Jamestown meant I had plenty of time to explore the island. On this trip, I left my diving equipment behind and explored the island on foot and by bike. If you don’t want to leave your dogs behind, I’m happy to tell you, this is not the place to go. Jamestown is one of the most dog-friendly places I’ve visited, with dog-friendly beaches, restaurants, and parks.
I stayed with my parents in an RV parked at Fort Getty Park**. Jamestown is an easy 1.5 hour drive from Connecticut’s central coast. I left Friday morning around 10:30 with two dogs and a 3 month old, planning to be in Jamestown by lunchtime. Since I have dogs, I would prefer a quiet location off a main road with easy/close parking. I visited the lovely village bakery and cafe and was pleasantly surprised by how dog friendly it was inside and out. Jamestown’s beautiful public square was the coolest square I’ve ever seen, and its street-side location made it a great place to visit with kids (the little ones love a good lunch on the square. Let’s run before we sit down). Lunch was a bit pricey ($16 for a sandwich and iced coffee), but I’m glad I found such a nice place with friendly staff and a dog-friendly atmosphere.
After lunch, you can hang out for a while before heading off to wherever you want to go on the weekend. Located in the Windmill Hill Historic District, the Jamestown Windmill is one of Jamestown’s most iconic landmarks. I have to admit, it has a small design and structure, no sail.
