Buying A Vacation Home Or A Cabin Upstate, New York
Fall is one of the most precious seasons in the Hudson Valley. The weather is warming up… As a busy pet parent, I try to find time to take my daughter Zoe for dog walks. Growing up in a country family, my childhood was full of adventure and travel. I can’t wait to relive these memories with my fur baby. So when I was offered a weekend getaway through vacation rental company Getaway, I was floored!
I’ve always heard people go to New York State, but I’ve never been there for myself. That all changed in the spring of 2019 when I had the opportunity to stay at the Getaway Cabins at Cat Mountain.
Getaway offers dog cabins in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Portland, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. Getaway will soon be offering cabins around Los Angeles and Dallas. They make it really easy to travel on vacation with your dog without having to worry about whether or not the property is worth it. Plus, there are plenty of outdoor spaces for dogs to play in and small towns just waiting to be explored.
I left our office with my partner Daniel and his dog Sawyer and headed north to get away from the “always on” mentality and focus on new views on the mountain.
Pet Friendly And Romantic Cabin Getaways
On Friday morning we started our journey to the cabin. It was more fun than going to the office on a Friday morning, that’s for sure.
The foggy day made for a beautiful drive 120 miles north with the music playing and the fresh air blowing through the windows. The dogs loved to sit in the back seat and Zoe was featured prominently in my clothes.
For fussy four-legged travelers, comfort food is essential, especially on long trips, and we always keep it on hand. I would have Zoe D with us heading north.
Once we arrived at our dog-friendly apartment, the dogs couldn’t be more excited to explore and took us for a tour of their home (or as Ter says: led us) before heading to our small and cozy apartment. .

We were pleasantly surprised by the smell of new wood as we entered our cottage, and the bay window lit up the entire space. The queen was wrapped in a freshly laundered blanket and we were treated to a little bag and paper sewing machine in our house for the next few days.
There was a small kitchen stocked with essentials for cooking, a small dining area for buying snacks, and a private bathroom with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
After unpacking our bags (check out our travel stuff here ), we hopped in the car and headed north to Albany, New York for coffee and breakfast. We hadn’t originally planned to visit Albania, but having never been there before and being so close, insiders convinced us to stop by the National Assembly building.
After a quick coffee refill at Stacks Espresso Bar – a local, dog-friendly cafe with a variety of teas and even coffees, roasts and milk – we’re in the city of legs and feet.
New York — Hike With Your Dog
Many of Albania’s restaurants, shops and cafes welcome puppies and children, and this beautiful country capital is worth a visit! We arrived in historic Lark, where the old shops and brownstones were reminiscent of New York. Then we went to the New York Department of Education building, which opened in 1912. We didn’t get a chance to go inside the building, but we did notice the 90-foot tall marble columns in front of us. The dog played with us in the nearby grassy park.
Located next to the 1890s brownstone Holroyd Mansion, The Iron Gate offers fresh food and vegetarian options with a charming, dog-friendly patio. Dining with two good pups was great, although it was difficult with larger or more aggressive pups as customers had to walk on the outside seats to get inside the restaurant.
I ordered the Vermonster sandwich—a turkey sandwich with cream cheese, apple, cranberry, and celery dressing—and Daniel got the Buddha bowl with roasted potatoes, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa, and tofu. We were halfway through lunch when it started to rain.
We packed up the groceries and got the dog out to the car before the rain started. Pet care isn’t perfect, but it does make for perfect moments. We finished dinner at the car park, laughed at our muddy feet and messy hair, and headed south.

Fortunately, the spring rain was short-lived and washed away within an hour. So we continued our plan to visit Kaaterskill Falls.
The trail to Kaaterskill Falls is within walking distance. It was an easy dog walk and took about 2 hours to get out.
We parked in the parking lot on NY-23A and drove right across the street. The small waterfall at the beginning serves as a preview of the humbling and dramatic views that lie ahead. Although the section is steep and rocky, the 2.5-mile hike is worth it. New York State’s tallest Double Cascade Falls marked the end of the trail, allowing us to rest and enjoy our accomplishments.
Zoe and Sawyer are total warriors. I’m used to checking outside, but be careful with small dogs because their legs can handle them.
