The Best Dog Friendly Spots For A Day Out In Dorset
Charmouth Beach is surrounded by large black cliffs and the beach itself is mainly gravel. Although low tide exposes large amounts of sand, this makes it a great spot for swimmers. There is a cozy cafe to relax in, and beach huts can be rented. We had good luck at Monmouth Beach, which is said to be one of the best places for fossil hunting. Charmouth Beach is divided into three areas, each with dog walking restrictions. So pay attention to road signs.
This small sandy beach is on the eastern side of Lyme Regis, on a busy beach. Despite such a large space, it’s so small that it’s rarely busy. At high tide the beach disappears, but when the tide is out, it’s an enclosed area perfect for playing safely on a leash. Church Cliff Beach was my favorite beach because of its calmness. The cliffs, known as spittles, are some of the best fossil hunting grounds on the Jurassic Coast. Not much in the way of views, not much in the way of amenities. But if you’re looking for a quiet place away from the crowds, East Cliff Beach is a must-see. There is a car park on Charmouth Road for easy access to the beach.
On the other side of Lyme Regis, further down the coast, past the beach huts, is Monmouth Beach. Next up is Ware Cliffs, another great spot for fossil hunting. As I walked along the beach with my partner, my traveling companions spotted several grifas (‘devil’s toenails’). It’s a more popular spot than East Cliff Beach, but it’s just as busy as the main sands at Lyme Regis. Parking is available at Monmouth Beach Car Park.
