Wales is certainly a great place for a dog holiday. There are wide, sandy beaches begging for overexcited pups to run around; mountaineering for epic views; There are forests and woodlands (with plenty of red squirrels) to explore, and there are 870km of spectacular coastal paths offering almost endless walking opportunities.

Or venture deeper into Snowdonia National Park to climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and surrounding peaks with your dog by your side. The Brecon Beacons offer equally exciting walking opportunities and Pembrokeshire boasts some of the UK’s best Blue Flag beaches, many of which are dog-friendly all year round.

On the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, this irresistibly welcoming and relaxed pub, with its colorful artwork and antique furniture, is one of the best dog-friendly places in the region. Come for the great regional walks (perhaps find yourself in the heights to the top of the famous Pen y Fan or stroll along the Mon and Brec canals) and stay for the great food. Their roast dinner here is legendary, so time your visit on a Sunday afternoon. Dogs will receive bowls, treats and blankets on arrival, and staff will provide advice on walks in the area.
After a day hiking in the mountains of Snowdonia, you’ll want a chance to relax and unwind those sore muscles; It’s easy in a pale room. This beautiful villa, once the summer home of a former mine owner, has beautiful gardens for peaceful strolls and lovely lounges for subsequent gin and tonics. Best of all, the hotel offers in-room spa treatments for tired legs and sore feet. Your dog can join you for breakfast or dinner in the downstairs café and spare blankets, bowls and leashes are also provided. There is also a pedestrian zone around the helicopter when it is not in use.

Don’t let retreat be the operative word: the Cliffs is one of the nicest places to stay in Snowdonia, and far better than any crappy YHA you lived in as a teenager. There are stunning views from the front terrace (on a clear day you can see the peaks of Snowdonia from the lake below) and the bathrooms are beautifully appointed with plush sofas, plush carpets and blankets. Little metal rings are attached to everything, so you can keep the dog on a leash while you eat breakfast or cook in the stainless steel communal kitchen, and outside there’s a fire pit where you can watch the sun set over the mountains.
If you’re looking for a slice of Miami-chic on the Welsh coast, Sandy Mount House has plenty to offer. Expect lots of rough wood and neutral colors, light-filled bedrooms and a charming tiled bar where dogs will welcome you for breakfast, lunch or dinner. But best of all, next door is the vast expanse of soft yellow sand that is Threat Crighill. Walk it all and then climb the dunes at the Oyster Catcher Restaurant, which has a dog-friendly dining room and special seafood dinners.
The whole of Castell Malgwyn has the feel of a Gothic boudoir: charcoal gray walls, bold artwork, bookshelves and a large fireplace come together to create a rather bright home. And you’ll feel right at home because there are only four bedrooms and the owners live next door. However, when you’re not lounging in the music room or library, the incredible walking fields beckon outside the windows: try the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path for stunning sea views or climb the picturesque nearby Pressell Hills, home to an ancient burial ground. If you want to avoid the crowds that flock to the more popular areas of Wales such as Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons, head into the Cumbrian Mountains to stay in Royston. This Victorian house has been converted into a stunning B&B with mid-century furniture and bright artwork that makes it very modern. Both dog-friendly rooms are carpet-free for cleanliness, and there’s a dispenser outside for muddy dogs to wash off after a long walk.
