Looking for a fun day out with your dog in Melbourne? Whether you prefer the beach or the mountains, staying close to the city or going on a road trip, I’ve got a lot of ideas for day trips around Melbourne with your dog, all within a 2-hour drive from the city center. Which of these fun ideas will you tag along with your pup next time?

Melbourne deserves to be known around the world for its street art. And spending a few hours exploring on foot is an amazing activity to do with your pup. Unlike art galleries, there are no rules against animals walking in the hallways!

Melbourne’s most famous street art destination is Hosier Lane in the city centre, close to Federation Square. I also highly recommend ACDC Lane and Duckboard Place nearby, which are usually less crowded. Combine a walk with your dog with a visit to a dog-friendly cafe, whether it’s in one of the city streets or on the banks of the Yarra.

If you’d rather not venture fully into the city centre, there are also plenty of great examples in other suburbs, perfect for pairing with brunch at a cafe or a drink at a local pet-friendly pub.

Our Dog Friendly Guide To The Mornington Peninsula

If you prefer a walk to the dunes, one of the best destinations outside of Melbourne is Yew Young Regional Park. Located less than an hour from central Melbourne, this regional park welcomes dogs to join you as long as they are on a leash.

The You Yangs take their name from a local Aboriginal word meaning ‘big mountain in the middle of the plain’. The park’s most popular hiking trail leads to the summit of Flinders Peak. From the top of this granite platform there is a magnificent view of Melbourne and the Bellarine Peninsula. Walking back 3.5 km took about an hour, with many steps on the way.

There are also a variety of shorter and longer walks, including several more level options. An easier option is the 800 meter circuit around Big Rock. Don’t miss the short walk to the top of this granite platform, just 100 meters from the parking lot. There are also many picnic spots in the park.

A great place to visit on a weekend trip from Melbourne that your pooch will love is Miss Drew’s Bakery and Dog Cafe on the Mornington Peninsula. Located behind the Tyabb Packing House, surrounded by antique shops, the Dog Cafe is open on Saturdays and Sundays. (Better to check opening hours beforehand.)

The menu has a wide variety of treats for dogs, from pugichinos to muffins and cookies. Maybe order one of the dog treats and enjoy at one of the many tables. There is also a shop for treats and toys, as well as the possibility to order a cake for the dog’s birthday.

When there are no human options on the menu, head to Rattling Red Cafe across the street and grab a coffee to go.

St Kilda has long been a popular day trip destination in Melbourne and a great place to visit with your dog. Although your dog is not allowed on the Luna Park rides, instead walk along the pier (where dogs are allowed on a leash) and enjoy the surrounding beaches.

The closest dog-friendly beach in St Kilda is on the west side of the pier, on Pier Road across the street. Here, dogs are allowed to die all day, all year. On the east side of the pier, dogs are allowed to walk on the sand only in winter. Dogs are also allowed all year round on the sand in St Kilda West, except in sensitive dune areas, and between Brooks Jetty and the north end of the St Kilda Marina car park.

If you visit St Kilda on a Sunday, check out the market stalls on the Esplanade. Also, be sure to walk around Gray Street and visit Chez Misty. This French creperie has an entire menu of crepes and pupicchinos just for dogs, as well as savory galettes and sweet crepes for humans. There is a dog bed in the back and there is also an off-leash lounge.

Chez Misty is not only a dog-friendly bakery, but also offers paddle boarding and brunch for adventurous kids. First, you’ll enjoy a 1-hour stand-up paddleboarding session with the pups, followed by breakfast together at Chez Misty.

In the summer of 2022-2023, Paddle and Brunch is held several days a month, combining Saturdays and weekdays. Stay tuned for the 2023-24 calendar. Groups are limited to four people and a dog, and life jackets and SUP lessons from Karen from SUP for PUP are included. Of course, lots of photos were taken!

Want more opportunities to learn to paddleboard with your pup? Check out the range of lessons SUPS offers for Pups in Bayside and the Mornington Peninsula. They even give dog swimming lessons to less confident kids!

The Ultimate Guide To Pet Friendly Trips In Victoria

A great place for dogs in central Melbourne is the Royal Victoria Botanic Gardens – Melbourne Gardens. Leashed dogs can join you for a walk in the garden, around an ornamental pond, through a fern-covered ravine or through a ‘volcano’.

Another feature of visiting the Botanical Garden is enjoying a punt on the lake. Private tours are usually 30 minutes and run from September to May. The deck can accommodate up to six passengers, and well-behaved dogs can join for free. There’s even an Instagram account dedicated to dogs on the antlers!

It is best to book in advance, at least during the festive period. Punts start from the area in front of the Terrace Cafe.

Dogs can be kept all day, all year round, on the beach and in the nearby off-leash park at Burns Nature Reserve. However, dogs must be leashed in the parking lot and on the beach path, and must stay outside the protected area.
