Dog Friendly Trip Ideas – We call this trip “Lincoln’s List” because this itinerary was created with our best friend in mind.
Our dog, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since his 2019 year and is a big factor in why we fell in love with road trips. Simply put, road trips are the most convenient way to travel with him (and we use the Lincoln pretty much everywhere we go).

This route is similar to Wicked Sting: His 10-Day Itinerary in Nebraska, only it includes the stops listed above and tips for bringing your pup along.
During the summer, take advantage of the longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than many other states at this time of year. Or, take a trip in the fall and enjoy spectacular fall foliage at some of the world’s best fall foliage spots.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during the 2022 travel season, including 2 weeks in Vermont in July, a long weekend camping on Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula in early August, and mid to mid-August. I spent three weeks near Lake Placid, New York towards the end of the year. In August, I spent a month in Campton, New Hampshire, and in September I spent three weeks in Ellsworth. , in Maine in early October, and in Attleboro, Massachusetts for three weeks in late October. (He also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
Those few months weren’t bad times in New England. Sure, it can get hot at night during the summer, but as long as you make sure your rental property has air conditioning, you’ll be fine. (Actually, we say this as people who live in Texas; otherwise, our heat tolerance is higher than those of us who live up north year-round. That said, In this sense, our tolerance may actually be lower, since we also can’t do without air conditioning, lol!

However, if you are planning a trip to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage, we recommend traveling during the second week of October. Places known for their fall foliage (like Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, Vermont) can be crowded, but the views are worth it.
RTL Tip: Want to spend more time hiking and on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Why not take a pleasant walk among the autumn leaves with a cup of warm apple cider in hand? Visited in October. Is it better to have less crowds even if the temperature is low? Visited in September.
Lincoln is definitely a fan of our trip. Because it means that it is very easy for us to accompany him. If you have somewhere nearby to drive to on this trip, I recommend this. We reach the closest point on this route and circle back home.
However, if you can’t drive here and have a dog with you who likes to fly, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up your rental car upon landing. If you’re flying, we recommend slightly modifying this itinerary to drive Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, New Hampshire > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

With so many dog-friendly hiking trails and activities nearby, you can easily spend a week just exploring this area of New Hampshire. (We spent a month here and didn’t get to see everything on the list.)
However, on this trip, he only planned to enjoy the White Mountains for one day, so here are some recommended activities.
This is nice because you can actually drive the Kancamagus Highway on the route from Portland to Lincoln. (So come back to this section each time you take this route during your trip. Summer Activities You Can Do With Your Dog!
The Kancamagus Highway is a 54-mile route between Lincoln, New Hampshire and Conway, New Hampshire. It’s one of New Hampshire’s most popular trails and one of the best places to see fall foliage in the United States. This beautiful route has many places and trails that will keep you busy during your trip, but we recommend only stopping at a few scenic spots and not hiking along the way. (There are better ones!) Note: Visit in the fall. Wake up early in the morning. This route can get crowded quickly, so book the night before or wake up early to avoid long lines and heavy traffic on the way to your next destination. The Kancamagus Highway is great, but ideally it shouldn’t be your only activity of the day.

You can see all of New Hampshire’s favorite hikes here, but if you want the best advice, head to Welch Dickey Mountain. This 7.4-mile loop is a beautiful half-day hike with expansive mountain views. It’s dog-friendly, provides good training, and is great fun for those who can challenge themselves on a variety of terrain, including light rocks and wooded trails.
When searching for this hike under “All Trails”, look for “Welch Dickey Loop Trail” instead of “Welch Mountain Rockledge” or “Welch and Dickey Mountains.” As you go around the trail you will see the edge of the rock.
Find The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In The Usa
Both Welch and Dickey Mountain. We recommend walking counter-clockwise so you can climb higher sections. (This is especially helpful if you’re visiting in humid weather or during fall foliage when the leaves are still on the ground. The ground can be slippery, so arrive in plenty of time.)
