Who will be the next star on our wall of fame Do you want to have the best holiday with your dog this Christmas If you love the cold, snow and Christmas atmosphere, then Christmas in Quebec is perfect for dogs? Destination It’s about a nine-hour drive from New York City to Quebec, Canada, but it’s one of the best road trips I’ve ever taken.
Despite the long journey, this holiday trip was worth it. Like a Charles Dickens novel, Quebec turns into a Christmas village during the holidays. A Christmas Carol. Here you will find places to eat, activities and places to take your pet.
We stayed at the dog-friendly Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. The hotel is located on a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River, it looks like a castle in the sky. It is a 5 star luxury hotel and is the most photographed hotel in the world. The hotel allows two pets of any size for CDA$50 per night.
The interior of the hotel is fully decorated for the holiday season, with beautiful Christmas trees lining the halls. Check-in didn’t take long, and I was surprised how patient Gatsby online was waiting for me, even after a long drive. The hotel staff took great care of Gatsby. He doesn’t eat kibble so we had the hotel cook salmon and beef for him. The staff member asked Gatsby if the salmon was cooked to the correct temperature.

The best thing about Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac is that it offers dog-sitting services. I booked a sitter to come when Danny and I went out for dinner and dog sledding. The cost to come to our room to sit down to watch Gatsby was $26 CAD per hour for a minimum of three hours. You can ask your sitter to stay in your room alone, or they can take your dog for a walk and play in the snow park outside the hotel.
We walked along the Dufferin Terrace with Gatsby circling the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. This elevated area offers sweeping views of Old Quebec and the St. Lawrence River. There is a giant slide, and people stand at the top of the slide (80 meters high) to zoom down the toboggan at 100 miles per hour. Gatsby stayed where he was and enjoyed watching the crowd go down the slide.
German Christmas markets are open from November 22nd to December 23rd and we managed to make it to the last day of the holiday market. We wandered around the market and found unique and beautiful crafts made in Quebec, as well as German foods such as Nuremberg gingerbread, German Christmas cake, bratwurst, pretzels and wine.
Next we visited the Quarter Pit Champlain District. Since it’s a resort area, it’s Instagram-worthy too! The narrow cobblestone streets here are lined with Christmas lights and decorations. I love visiting boutique shops, some of them even Gatsby came with me.

Visit Notre Dame des Victoires, the oldest Roman Catholic church in North America, located on the Place Royale just off the Petite Champlain district.
Go to a beautiful square canoeing along the St. Lawrence River. Gatsby was playing in the snow here and we were looking for big snow flurries along the river.
Unfortunately, we could not eat at any of the restaurants in the area as there was no outside seating. Restaurants here have outdoor seating during the warmer months, and many people dine with their dogs. The only place that offered outdoor seating during the winter months was Pub des Bourgeois. It was freezing cold, but Gatsby wasn’t allowed in the pub, so we still sat outside. I enjoyed a glass of wine and Danny enjoyed hot French onion soup.
At the hotel, Danny chose a romantic dinner at Bistro Le Sam & Bar Atrium. The restaurant overlooks the St. Lawrence River and offers spectacular views. We ordered the maple syrup duck wings and the Atlantic salmon tartare as appetizers. For main courses, we had chicken fried cornish chicken and Danny had lamb shank rice. Of course, we had lots of wine and ended the evening by sharing dark chocolate lava cake.
Pet Friendly Canada: Top Destinations To Explore
I arranged for a pet sitter to come and meet Gatsby while Danny and I sled the dog on the Expedition Me Loop. From the hotel you need to go to Saint-Jean-de-l’Orléans, which is about 20 minutes away. If you do not have a car, the hotel can arrange transportation for you. Dog sledding is something I’ve always wanted to try! When we arrive these dogs are full of excitement and you can feel the energy.
The session started with a safety briefing and driving techniques before heading into the forest. I was sitting on the sled and Danny was standing behind me guiding the sled. The adventure took about an hour and included a 15-minute session with the child. The experience was everything I had hoped for and I am so grateful to have met these wonderful dogs. If you want to take on the challenge, we strongly recommend bringing a ski jacket and pants. I was wearing thermal leggings, but they weren’t enough to keep my legs warm.
Christmas in Quebec was the perfect holiday getaway. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and enjoyed the city’s winter weather and holiday vibe. No doubt Gatsby felt the same way. Cold temperatures, snow and ice, grilled salmon, room service meat cooked to the perfect temperature, a sitter to hold it, and a warm and comfortable king-size bed. What more could you ask for from Husky? We’re sure this will be Gatsby’s best dog-friendly vacation ever.
