Dog Friendly Vacations Colorado – Colorado has four national parks, and three of them have lots of dog areas! Unfortunately, the country’s most popular national park (Rocky Mountain National Park) does not allow dogs on any of its trails. But three lesser known parks – Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde and Black Canyon of the Gunnison are definitely worth a visit with your pup! All three of these parks are in southern Colorado, and can be combined into a great road trip (a dog-friendly Colorado road trip post is in the works). If you plan to visit multiple parks in the same year, consider getting an Annual National Parks Pass! An annual pass is $80, but admission to each individual park will be $25 or $30 each.
The Great Sand Dunes are about a four-hour drive south of Denver. Although it’s a lot of driving, it can be done in a day trip – which Alice and I did! Dogs are allowed on the first set of sand dunes and some tracks. I was so excited when we drove up to these huge dunes with 14 huge ships behind them. The weather can definitely make or break your time at this park. We were there the first week of April, on a sunny day, not too windy, not too hot and it was just perfect! It is very cold in winter, with snow, but very hot in summer. Some of the park’s trails are closed in the winter (and most of the spring), so you won’t be able to access the higher trails. If it’s too windy, sand can get into your puppy’s eyes. If it’s too hot, the sand can burn their feet. We saw other dogs with boots and glasses to match! Colorado weather is pretty unpredictable, but my goal is to go in April, May, or October, or arrive around sunrise before the heat hits. Be sure to stop to hike Zapata Falls along the way – you’ll see signs for it between the highway and the park entrance. Bring waterproof shoes, or at least a change of socks.

Mesa Verde, located in the southwest corner of Colorado, is filled with mountain houses built and inhabited by the ancient Pueblo people in the 12th century. Although dogs are not allowed on the tours that take you to the cliffs, they can accompany you on the Park Point Trail, Nordskold Site Trail #16, and the paved road and trails around the Mesa Top Loop with its many canyon lookouts and Can join on the rock. Opposing opinion… I like the Black Canyon of the Gunnison better than the Grand Canyon! The park wasn’t very crowded when I was there in July, and the views of the canyon walls are amazing. The marble design in the rock is amazing, and the rock layers created by the canyon look great. Dogs are allowed almost anywhere above the rim, although this is not entirely clear on the map. The Rim Trail is definitely dog friendly. Other viewpoints with shorter trails, such as Painted Wall, Sunset Point, and Chasm View, have small signs indicating that leashes are allowed. Be sure to watch the sunset from Sunset, it was spectacular! Weather can be an issue here – the main road is closed in winter, but it gets very hot during the day in summer.
If you’re looking for a place to stay nearby, the Holiday Inn Express in Montrose is about 20 minutes from the park entrance and everyone was very friendly. I also recommend stopping by the Museum of the West while you’re in the area. It’s actually a small old western town full of artifacts, and dogs are allowed! Happy 2017, friends! Here they are. Although I recently checked in with you six weeks before my trip to Macon, my New Year’s resolution is to blog more – wait, that’s Mom’s New Year’s resolution. I’m too lazy to actually come up with mine, so I’ll just compare her and roll with it, okay?
But I’m basically a champion road warrior, so it wasn’t a big deal. I walked through these airports – up and down the escalators back – and straight through the TSA lines like a boss and got tons of attention because I love it.
Mom and Dad thought that since they were staying with friends in Fort Collins, I could join in Colorado. I don’t really know why this is important, but apparently they say hotels don’t always like my type, so I’m borrowing a page from Stephanie Tanner’s book. How stupid!
But Fort Collins seems to be a friend of the inland nation, as I was allowed to visit a few different places like the McClain Brewery and New Belgium.

Thanks to the dog, because it was cold outside! As a Maltese, I’m the proud owner of a full head of hair but I’m not blessed with fur, so I can’t handle 20 degrees like a breed twice my magnificent size.
Or well, the grass is dead and crisp like it was when we went to Estes Park. I had these grand visions of three feet of snow that I would plow through, and what did I get instead?!?
Still, I guess—sigh—it’s good to spend time with mom and dad, regardless of the circumstances. (Mommy made me say that, can you tell?) The snow can wait.
I learned something on that trip, and that’s the fact that I skate almost professionally.

We then headed to the town of Estes Park to thaw out our little feet, where I was greeted with a very warm hug by the canine kneelers of Elkins Distilling Company.
I match the setting! Obviously I was born to be a distillery dog too. Maybe he was friendly, and I liked him (which I can say for most of my species I meet). He also shared his whiskey with me.
In fact, I liked him so much that when he pulled a trick out of my playbook — the old high-five, which is always guaranteed to impress people — I didn’t even try to show it. How’s that for some humility?
On our last day before heading back home to my collection of stuffed monkeys in Tennessee, we quickly left for Denver where we were to meet up with Mom’s friend and colleague Lauren.

Instead, we met Lauren at a park where I could have chased the geese but it was so cold that neither of us named (although I bow my feet to you, folks)-long. I’ve decided that if you don’t care about my kind, Denver, I sure as hell don’t care about you. You have seen the last of this jet puppy!
Colorado may not have given me snow (or beer in Denver for that matter), but I got my dose of that fluffy white powder when we visited northern Washington state for a week. Guess you’ll have to tune in next time and read it all
