From campsites to holiday apartments and beach houses, here are some of our favorite Great Dane holiday destinations in South East Queensland. Living in Brisbane during the time of COVID and border closures allowed us to travel a lot. And traveling locally meant that Great Dane Pickles were always included in our travel plans. ABOUT ME

Dog Friendly Places Near Me To Stay

I am Sasha, Great Dane mother and owner of Arctic Mist. A few years ago, I never went more than a few months without an international vacation. But times have changed and over the years we have done many local trips with the Great Dane Sour, mainly around South East Queensland. Sadly, Pickle passed away last year. However, recently, a Great Dane puppy named Pumpkin appeared in our family. He follows in Pickle’s footsteps and joins us in many comments.

So I thought I’d share my favorite places to stay with dogs in South East Queensland, including links to attractions and accommodation.

But before we go any further, if you’ve never walked your dog before and don’t know where to start, check out my blog

There are many dog friendly camps in Australia and Hip Camp is a good place to start. You can enter multiple pets in your search and the results will only show the pet selection.

One of my favorite dog camps is Gordon Country in the Humburra Valley. It sits above the Cunningham Gap between Oratula and Warwick, just over 2 hours from Brisbane. We have camped there countless times and started going there years ago (long before Pickle) when it was a cattle ranch with no equipment. It has changed a lot over the years and now they have resorts, glamping resorts and lodges.

While the campground and grounds are dog-friendly, they do not allow dogs in the cabins (fenced yards and porches only). That’s why we didn’t live in houses. If you go outside of school/holidays, you’ll find a hidden spot by the river. However, you will need a 4WD to find the best camping spots. Access to Gordon Country is via a dirt road and there are areas with 4WD access close to the gate and the office.

Dogs can get off a large leash. Be careful because cows and donkeys roam freely here. We love going there to relax by the fire, but there are plenty of 4WD and hiking trails. If you don’t mind the cold, you can swim in the river, if you go in winter, take all warm clothes, it will be very cold!

There are many different campsites on North Stradbroke Island. Dog laws change regularly, so it’s worth checking the Stradbroke Island website for the latest information on dog-friendly campsites and beaches. Stradbroke Island is a 45-minute boat ride from Cleveland. There is public transport on Stradbroke Island but if you are taking your dog I recommend taking the ferry. Please note that dogs must be muzzled to exit the vehicle. Stradbroke Island also has dog friendly holiday homes, see below for details.

If you are looking for a home/holiday home,  Holiday With Dogs is a great website to find dog friendly accommodation. Each property has a list of pet-friendly features, such as whether the area is fenced, whether dogs are allowed inside, and whether there are items such as dog beds, bowls and litter bags.

Make sure you read the conditions as some places only allow dogs or dogs of a certain size outside

. If conditions are unclear, please contact your accommodation provider before booking. It’s better to be clear in advance than to have a problem in the middle of the holiday!

Also make sure that the layout of the property is suitable, i.e. whether your dog is comfortable with stairs or an elevator, whether there is a fenced area or space for your dog to do its own thing. If you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to ask.

We stayed in a beautiful 2 bedroom 1 bathroom (Perfect Alex Beach Pad) at Alexandra Headland, north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It is on the second floor and has stairs to access the living room. However, there is a large terrace with a beautiful view, so you don’t feel like you’re in an apartment. Dogs are allowed inside, but not on furniture or in the public pool area.

Walking distance to Headland and Mooloolaba. There are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating along Mooloolaba Beach, and every 1.

Mooloolaba Beach is not dog friendly. However, Alexandra Headland Beach is dog friendly and there are other dog friendly beaches a short walk away.

Noosa Avalon Cottages is situated on 30 acres of land 5 minutes from Pomona and approximately 30 minutes from Noosa. The property has 5 detached houses ranging from 1-bedroom to 3-bedroom. All are dog friendly and dogs are allowed inside. We stayed in the 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom Kangaroo Lodge. The cottage is very nice, spacious living area with great views and great spa. Beds are small (double) but would recommend for a nice quiet weekend.

Some kennels have decks that are safe for your dog. Kangaroo Cottage has a fenced yard, but it’s not a dog fence, it’s a cow fence. But our Great Dane was fine with that. It’s a wonderful place to walk with natural gardens, lots of wildlife and birds and free-roaming cattle, so you might want to keep your dogs on a lead.

Pomona is a small country town with several restaurants, coffee shops and an IGA supermarket. There is a dog-friendly market at Stan Topper Park on Saturday mornings. They have lots of local arts/crafts as well as food stalls.

Toowoomba is the largest city in Queensland and is known as the Garden City. Many people come in the spring for the famous Carnival of Flowers. It’s a beautiful city with lots of parks and gardens to explore.

We have been to Toowoomba many times. However, my favorite place to stay is the Cozy Cat Cottage in Toowoomba. 3 bedroom beautifully renovated Queenslander house. It is one of three heritage-listed houses of early workers. This picture-perfect home retains all the details and spirit of its heritage charm, but has been updated to provide modern comforts. There are 2 queen bedrooms downstairs and an upstairs bedroom with 2 beds perfect for kids. There is 1 bathroom with a large tub, an electric fireplace in the living room, and a kennel on the back porch perfect for small to medium dogs. The yard is fully fenced, but there are steps to access the yard from the back deck.

Dogs are allowed in the cottage except in the bedrooms and sofas. The bathroom and kitchen were well equipped and there were even cookies for our dogs on arrival! Hosts Janice and Michael were great. We would definitely stay there again.

Dog Friendly Guide For San Antonio, Texas

Mujimba is a small quiet beach resort on the Sunshine Coast, close to Sunshine Coast Airport. There is a nice dog park on the esplanade overlooking Mujimba Beach. North Shore Dog Beach south of Mujimba in Twin Waters is considered the best dog beach on the Sunshine Coast.

Mudjimba Holiday Rentals has many friendly hosts and Kirsty was a pleasure to deal with. We stayed in a beautiful 4 bedroom house on the esplanade in front of the park. We traveled with our family and had 2 dogs with us (a Great Dane and our family members older dog). Dogs were allowed in the house, but not on the furniture.

There is a delicious Italian restaurant and cafe on the esplanade with dog-friendly areas.

If you have a boat or just love the beach, Harvey Bay is a must! We traveled with friends and stayed at ‘Sandpiper’, a lovely 4 bedroom cottage in Craneish, just 10 minutes north of central Hervey Bay. Craneish is a quiet place to stay but was perfect for us as it has a large yard for the kids and dogs and ample parking for the boat. The house has everything you need, incl
