Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast

Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast

Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast – In this post, I want to take a look at the most dog-friendly places in the West ~ focusing on California and Oregon, two states where you can easily travel with pets (I know because I’m here, I travel all the time! Within these states, I push the envelope in terms of dog accessibility. Want to find places to push: That means spacious dog parks or dog-friendly beaches, great pet-friendly hotels, and a laid-back city atmosphere that makes it easy to embrace. And I found Bend, Oregon, and Carmel, California.. .found so many places.  Join me and my dog Dylan as we explore the “Best Dog Friendly Places on the West Coast”!

Although my only dog-friendly beach destination in Oregon is Cannon Beach, note: almost every beach in Oregon is dog-friendly and has far fewer rules and restrictions than California beaches! Translation: Oregon’s coast is ideal for dog walking. Photo of Gold Beach, Oregon.

I love Cannon Beach for so many reasons: charming town, dozens of great restaurants, coffee (Sleeping Monk!!), first class pet-friendly hotels, and of course: 100% pet-friendly beach  No clue needed here! !  Oregon is more relaxed than California in this regard.  And the view of Haystack Rock will mesmerize you, especially at sunset.  Stroll down Ocean Avenue with your dog, grab a bowl of soup on one of the many outdoor patios, and don’t forget to stop at the adorable pet store on the corner: Puppy Love of the Ocean.

*** My pick for the best pet-friendly hotels in Cannon Beach: It’s a tie between Ocean Lodge and Surf Sands Resort.  Both are luxury beachfront hotels and many are pet friendly.  Ocean Lodge rooms are larger and take better advantage of the view ~ but close to Surfsend Town and High Stack Rock, the rooms are comfortable, and their Wayfarer Restaurant is my favorite place in town (and has room service)…

Bend is my current residence in the United States, and frankly, I don’t think I’ve had a good life for animals.  The staggering number of dog parks in Bend itself puts California’s dog parks to shame, and almost every restaurant in the city with a patio is dog-friendly, including: McMenamin’s St. Francis School (which is a pub, pub, cinema, concert venue). , a cigar bar and hotel all in an old Catholic school), Naked Winery, Avid Cider, Crooks Brewing, 10 Barrel… and the list goes on… and on.

Bend has more dog-friendly parks, hotels and restaurants per capita than any other city on this list! Dylan is shown here at a bend in the city on the famous Deschutes River Trail.

*** My pick for the best pet-friendly hotel in Bend: Tethro Golf Resort.  At Tethro, you have luxury golf resort accommodations with stunning mountain views ~ and you’re only a 5-minute drive from downtown Bend and the famous Old Mill District.  This is the best pet-friendly place to stay in the city.  Otherwise, head to Sun River Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend: one of America’s best family resorts.

Carmel’s main beach is my favorite off-leash dog beach in the world: legendary Pebble Beach is to the right, and if you look to the left at Crescent Beach, cypress trees frame your view. All kinds of multi-million dollar homes…from cute, cottage-style to modern and trendy.  There’s a reason Clint Eastwood lives here: There’s something special about Carmel.

And this city loves dogs: they are welcome almost everywhere ~ but I especially like the cozy outdoor terrace of Forge in the Forest, which has a special offer for dogs…

Carmel isn’t the only place on Monterey Bay with amazing ocean views: visit Pacific Grove and walk along the beach for views like…

*** My favorite dog-friendly hotel in Carmel: The Cottage at Pebble Beach.  Yes, it’s expensive~ but according to my parents and helpful bellhop: every room here is pet friendly!  And you can bring any size dog.  For a less expensive option in Carmel, try Doris Day’s pup-friendly Cypress Inn.

West Coast Destinations For An Affordable Weekend Trip

I grew up in Orange County and last week I visited friends in Huntington Beach at the new outdoor mall in Pacific City.  When I went home for Christmas, I had Dylan ~ which meant I got to take him to the mall with me…and boy was he surprised at how pet friendly he was!  Luxury boutiques invited us in, had coffee with us and we all ate on Simji’s terrace overlooking the pier and the sea.  I would go back in a heartbeat!  And there’s another reason to visit Huntington with your dog: It’s the only beach in Orange County where dogs are allowed off-leash.

*** My pick for the best dog-friendly hotel in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach.  Comptons are notoriously chic and always dog-friendly…they even offer dog happy hour!  It’s also especially romantic, with ocean views matched by a pale blue color palette ~ and you’re only a block from the pier, Main Street, and the ocean.  And Huntington’s Dog Beach is just a few miles north…

San Diego has not one but two off-leash dog beaches, and both are located in shady areas: Del Mar and Coronado.  Dylan and I experienced Del Mar Dog Beach last year, which is south of Encinitas.  Although it’s not as big as Carmel Beach, it’s still spectacular.  Happy dogs ran in and out of the water, people were relaxed and friendly, and parking was easy on the same street as the beach entrance.  Coronado Dog Beach has pristine white sand and is just a stone’s throw from the pet-friendly historic Hotel del Coronado.

Coronado’s Dog Beach is one of the best places in Southern California to play in the sand with your dog.

Dog Friendly Vacations Across The United States

*** My Top Picks for Dog Friendly Hotels in San Diego: San Diego is big, so it depends on where you want to stay.  For North County, try the luxurious L’Auberge del Mar, which welcomes two dogs of any size.  If you’re downtown in the Gaslamp, try the trendy Hotel Indigo with its rooftop bar.  And if you want to stay close to Coronado’s legendary dog beach, check out the Hotel del Coronado ~ where three of its restaurants are pet-friendly!  (Deals only on dogs under 40 pounds…)

This covers my picks for the best dog destinations on the West Coast!  Something I’d like to add: More and more travel articles I’ve been reading recently suggest that A.I. Or by editors who haven’t actually been to the places they recommend.  Rest assured: I’ve visited every place on this list in the past year, so my recommendations are for the present and for 2020 and beyond!

Since 2010, I’ve traveled with Dylan every year between California and Oregon ~ so these are all places I’ve actually visited and hope to go back to later in the year.
