The Central Coast is home to several national parks with large gates that are unfortunately off limits to dogs. Instead, I recommend heading to Strickland State Forest for a dog-friendly forest walk on the Central Coast.

Start somewhere along the Terrigal coast; Like the promenade that starts at the northern end of the Esplanade, opposite Painters Lane. Then follow the winding path to the boardwalk and around the cliff to the shelter.

Follow the path around the boat ramp and car park to Terrigal Haven. A large portion of the mountain’s grassy area is designated as an off-leash dog park, so you can keep your dog off-leash. Be aware of the limitations as it is not fenced and there is a parking lot nearby.

If you are not going to climb the stairs, I suggest you stop in front of the view point. Otherwise, continue along the path (with your dog on its back) past the parked cars and follow the stairs to the stairs. It’s a pretty tough climb, but the view from the top is amazing. Watch for whales during migration season.

Another state forest with hiking trails near the Central Coast is Olney State Forest. It is about a 40-minute drive northwest of Tuggerah, off the motorway at Morriset.

The state forest also has an unpaved access road that is generally well maintained and good for 2WD vehicles. However, if you have a 2WD vehicle, skip it if you don’t like driving after heavy rain or on open roads.

A great dog-friendly bush walk is the Pines Trail. The trail begins at the Pines Picnic Area (not the nearby Pines Campground). The 1.7 km long trail leads from Dora Creek through moist eucalyptus forests and rainforest, passing a beautiful rock pool along the way. Allow to soak for about 45 minutes.

Note that the nearby More Abbots Falls trail is not entirely dog friendly. A portion of the trail on German Point Road crosses into nearby Watkins National Park, where pets are not allowed.
