Lately, we’ve been mixing up our bike rides with places to stay, so we can do something new when we return to places we’ve visited before. Although we no longer have time to go on multi-day cycling trips due to work, a leisurely cycling trip where we can enjoy a quick overnight or weekend break at a resort later on is something we can look forward to.

To make the most of our bike trip, we stayed at Sabangan Beach Resort, a bike-friendly and pet-friendly resort, and met up with high school friends for a hangout and food trip afterwards.
The Laiya area in San Juan, Batangas, offers a variety of accommodations from budget guesthouses and campsites to high-end beachfront hotels. It is one of the best beach destinations for families traveling overland from Metro Manila because of its proximity.
It takes about 4 to 5 hours by car to get here from Quezon City depending on the route you take. Due to its location and distance from the main road, it is easy to get here by private transport.
Sabangan Beach Resort is one of the famous resorts in Laiya area. The resort is well designed with an intimate feel amongst the beautiful surroundings and private villas. The beach front offers views of Mount Daguldul in Mindoro. The 6,000 square meter resort offers guests a retreat surrounded by nature and enhanced by the comforts of home.

The main attraction of the resort is the availability of all services and easy access to the beach. You can enjoy outside, swim and walk to the end of the beach. You can go on a boat and enjoy activities like banana boating, kayaking, and more, but still have a comfortable hotel-style room at night, a decent bathroom, and all the meals prepared for you during the your visit.
For those with cars, the resort has a secure parking area that is open 24/7. I found the resort to be very good for cycling, as we could easily bring our bikes from the car park to the villas, which had a wide yard where we could park them without even locking them when going to the beach. We were also able to wash the bikes with a hose directly outside the villa in the foot wash area before we left.
For those who want to vacation with their pets, Sabangan Beach Resort is also pet-friendly. There were several friendly and healthy resort cats on site who joined us for dinner and hung around our villa. We also saw some visitors bringing their pet dogs.
Sabangan is the first resort in Laiya that welcomes small children. Guests are allowed to bring a maximum of 3 small and medium dogs, and they must be kept safe at all times. Dogs can swim on the beach and enjoy playing in the sand.

Each unit has a private toilet, shower, hot and cold shower, coffee and tea making facilities, cable TV, WiFi and personal fridge. The rates also include breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We stayed in the Narra B Bungalow, which had two double beds (sleeps 4), a clean modern bathroom, a TV and a small fridge.
The large porch has a comfortable seating area and a sink to relax and store your bike and beach items so that the room does not become sandy. It was nice to sit there on the porch overlooking the yard.

The friends were accommodated in a two-bedroom Yakal Bungalow, which has a large porch and a large area in front of the beach.
For families traveling with children, Sabangan Resort has a small pool in a secluded, tree-lined area for those who don’t want to sunbathe on the beach. There is a shallow water area for small children and a 4-foot pool for adults. The pool is only available until 10:00 pm.
The resort also has a small children’s play area on site. Guests can also borrow volleyballs for beach volleyball activities with a minimum deposit. Water sports and boat trips can be arranged for groups.
For those who want a massage, the center has locally trained therapists and can arrange in-room massages by schedule or appointment (400 pesos per hour).

Accommodation at Sabangan Beach Resort includes meals scheduled at check-in and check-out. This includes buffet breakfast, merienda and dinner for all residents, so there is no need to go outside the resort or worry about where to eat.
The buffet (not self-service) is now included with the meals served in the Pavilion. During our stay, there were 3 to 4 stalls to choose from with dessert or fresh fruit at each meal. Visitors can also receive free coffee and water and bottle refills from dispensers located in the Pavilion.
We arrived at the resort after 6pm due to the long journey from Manila and the storm, but the staff had put out a lomi and toron merienda, which was much appreciated. Dinner on our first night consisted of lingu, limbu, chicken, sinigang, etc. The next day, there was pinakbet, inihau and manok, halan soup and more. There was a good variety of dishes to choose from.
The resort also has a small shop selling snacks, beer (£100/bottle for San Miguel Bali Pilsen) and beach essentials.

Lunch is not served at the resort, but guests can order a la carte from the Pavilion or walk/drive to nearby shops to sample the local cuisine.
My friends and I ate at the Sinsay Shalom Food House, which was a short walk from the resort. The local restaurant specializes in Batangas lomi, bulalo, sisig, crispy pata, silog meals and more.
Another dining option recommended by the resort owner is Basilio’s Brick Oven Pizza, the first brick oven pizza restaurant in San Juan, Batangas. It’s not near the beach, but it’s located in San Juan along the highway to Lipa, Batangas, so you can stop on your way to vacation or after checking out before heading back to Manila.
The signal for Globe and Smart was a little weak in that area. Although the resort has wifi, it only works in the lobby and not in the rooms. It worked well on our first day, but the signal was so shaky the day we left when we had to catch up on emails and work deadlines, that we had to go into town a bit with our laptops in town just to we check. for a sign.

Due to connectivity issues, the hotel’s credit card and GCash payment options were down during our stay and could only process cash payments. Fortunately there was an ATM outside the hotel to withdraw money. Visitors planning to stay here may want to bring enough cash.
For those who are looking for rest and the beach, and do not plan to work during their stay (I recommend you not), you can still enjoy the comfortable rooms, the beach, the meals and the private feeling of -resort.
