Vacations With Dogs East Coast – Long Island, New York is known for its beautiful beaches and excellent schools. One thing that is not known is that it is very dog friendly. That’s not to say there aren’t great places around Long Island to have fun with your dog. But there’s a great dog-friendly getaway in Montauk, New York, on the eastern tip of Long Island. This is one of the few places on Long Island where you can find beautiful and fun places to hang out with your dog.
Montauk is the eastern end of Long Island, and I mean the end. Since Montauk Point marks the end of Long Island, you’ll see t-shirts, bumper stickers and other items with the phrase “MONTAUK. THE END.” Walk along Montauk Point and you are miles from land in the open Atlantic Ocean.

One of Montauk Point’s main attractions is the historic 200-year-old lighthouse. For a fee, visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and gaze out over the Atlantic Ocean and Montauk. As you travel east to Montauk, you will pass through the chic area known as the Hamptons. Florida & Georgia: Our Dog Friendly Road Trip!
Summer fun on Long Island is the beach! Sunbathing, surfing, jet skiing, boating, or hiking the sand dunes and cliffs are favorite pastimes of Long Islanders. Having grown up on Long Island, I can attest that Long Islanders love their beaches and waterways. Unfortunately there are few beaches around the “island” that allow dogs. However, Montauk has at least two great beaches that are open to dogs all year round, any time of day! Unlike the beaches of Montauk’s neighbors, the Hamptons, strict rules restrict access to the beach for dogs.
Camp Hero was a military base until it was turned over to the New York City Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in the 1980s. No, we didn’t find any cannonballs except the ones in the nearby pools, LOL! Camp Hero is located on beautiful Montauk Beach and is dog friendly. We had a great time playing in the ocean, admiring the beauty of the beach and reefs.
In the photo below, you can see the historic Montauk Lighthouse in the distance. We had to walk a narrow and steep path to get down the rocks to the beach, but it was worth it!
Camp Hero’s steep bluffs are eroding and can be dangerous if you get too close. We enjoy its beauty from a safe distance.

Montauk Point State Park is the eastern end of Montauk, just down the road from Camp Hero State Park. The Montauk Point Lighthouse is a major tourist attraction. Camp Hero is free if you’ve already paid the $8 parking fee at Montauk Point State Park, so keep your receipt. .
During the American Revolution, Montauk Point suffered many maritime disasters. After the revolution, the newly formed American government wanted to stimulate trade with other nations. To do this, it was necessary to make the waters off Montauk Point less treacherous for seagoing vessels and to create a safer route to the great ports of New York and Baltimore.
In 1796, the Montauk Lighthouse, the first lighthouse built in New York State, was born out of this need. It is America’s fourth oldest operating lighthouse, guiding mariners safely through the thick fog that often blankets the ocean off the coast of eastern Long Island. It makes Long Islanders very proud!
The beach at Montauk Point State Park has a lot more seaweed and bigger rocks than the beach at Camp Hero, but it’s still fun! .

Gosman’s Dock is a waterfront area in Montauk that began as a small soup stand in the 1940s. It has turned into a small popular entertainment area with several shops, an ice cream stand, a clam bar and several waterfront restaurants, including the main one, Gosman’s. Restaurant Doc. Most restaurants don’t allow dogs on outdoor patios, but the one in this photo allows dogs on this outdoor “plum patio.”
After a super fun and tiring day in Montauk, we headed west and back home. Of course, we’re getting hungry after so much fun in the sun, so we stop at one of the many dog-friendly restaurants along the way. Sharing is caring! Burlington, Vermont is one of New England’s most dog-friendly destinations. With amazing outdoor adventures and a laid-back, modern downtown, Burlington is a playground for dogs and canines alike. You will find lots of fun things to do with your pup. Bike the Burlington Greenway along the shores of Lake Champlain, then stop to sample a local beer at one of the city’s many dog-friendly breweries. Beer spots in Burlington that allow pets include Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Co. they also allow dogs indoors. Church Street Marketplace, one of New England’s most famous pedestrian (and doggy) malls, has a variety of restaurants and dog shops. For pet-friendly lodging, Made Inn Vermont, an old-fashioned bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown, offers you and your dog a cozy home away from home.

You’ll especially enjoy visiting the Cape Cod National Seashore. These sun-drenched beaches and trails allow dogs to stay off-leash even in high season. Then quench your thirst at Provincetown Brewing Company. They are very dog friendly (and socially conscious), with a dog house in the beer garden that says “Racist Regime”. There are also a number of pet-friendly areas on the Cape. Pamper your pooch at the luxurious Chatham Bars Inn Resort or try to “shake it up” with your pooch at a campsite at Nickerson State Park.

For a relaxing beach getaway with your dog, check out Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Just five miles south of Portland, it’s a great place to get away from it all. At the southern end of Fort Williams State Park, home to Portland’s iconic lighthouses, there is a large grassy area where dogs can run and play. Of course, you can’t come to Maine without trying a local lobster roll, and Bite in Maine has an outdoor food truck in the park with pet-friendly picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular spot for pups to play in the sand and splash in the water. After a long day of fun in the sun, relax at Inn by the Sea, a pet-friendly and pet-friendly luxury beachfront resort.
