If you’re looking for something a little more connected to nature, 13 Acre Retreat might be the perfect place for you! I first discovered this hidden gem last winter while looking for a weekend getaway for my husband and I for our 2nd wedding anniversary. These adorable cottages are located. On 13 acres of wooded land, located just outside of Dripping Springs. San Antonio is only an hour and a half.
Each cabin has air conditioning/heating. small coffee maker Comfortable bed with fresh, clean sheets. and beautiful Texas mountain views. There are 2 shared restrooms on site. But don’t let that scare you! It is beautifully decorated and kept impeccably clean! Other amenities include a water cooler for refilling reusable bottles. Sink with soap for washing dishes and hands and hot showers. However, there are outdoor showers which are great but can be a bit chilly if you visit during the colder months.
There’s plenty to do during your stay at 13 Acre Retreat. You can drive around the property (note: there are no roads, so it’s an adventure!) or hop in your car and explore nearby parks, like Pedernales Falls, if walking isn’t your thing. what you (or your dog) you can explore dog-friendly wineries/breweries within 20-30 minutes of your stay. My favorite is Shadow Hawk’s Winery.
If you’ve never visited Lost Maples in the fall, You’re missing out. Lost Maples State Natural Area is less than two hours from San Antonio and is known for being one of the few places in Texas where you can see spectacular fall foliage. You have to time it just right because the leaves won’t change until the temperature drops. This is usually mid-October or early November. The weather in Texas is always unpredictable. But you can view the park’s fall foliage color report here.

As the leaves begin to change color, Lost Maples becomes a popular activity! We recommend booking your campsite well in advance – sometimes a year in advance! If you or your dog don’t like camping? You can definitely take a day trip to Lost Maples. It’s close enough to definitely drive there in the morning, take a walk, and drive home in the afternoon. However, it’s hard to miss a night or two under the stars. Especially when the weather is cold. With your dog tied up in a sleeping bag!
