After years of exploring New England with my dog, I’ve mapped out my favorite dog-friendly vacation spots. With tons of options for dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, and things to do, these dog-friendly travel ideas will give your pup two hands. So get ready to take your beloved paw-tanner on a trip and plan the ultimate dog-friendly vacation in New England!

Dog Friendly Vacations: Top 12 Cities In The Us

Burlington, Vermont is one of New England’s most dog-friendly destinations. Boasting incredible outdoor adventures, Burlington is a playground for dogs and their companions. You will find many fun things to do with your puppy. Bike the Burlington Greenway along the shores of Lake Champlain, then stop to sample local beer at one of the city’s many dog-friendly breweries. Burlington beer spots that allow patio pups include Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Company also allow dogs indoors. One of New England’s most popular pedestrian (puppy) malls, Church Street Marketplace features dog-friendly dining and shopping. For pet-friendly accommodations, Made Inn Vermont, a charming bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown, offers a cozy home away from home for you and your dog.

When the dog days of summer arrive, there’s no better place to be with your dog than Cape Cod! With miles of pristine beaches, irresistible charm, and countless outdoor activities, Cape Cod is the perfect summer destination for people and dogs alike. You’ll especially love visiting Cape Cod National Seashore. These sun-washed sandy beaches and trails allow dogs to escape even in high season. Afterwards, quench your thirst at Provincetown Brewing Company. They’re also very dog-friendly (and social conscious), with a dog house in the beer garden wearing a sign that says “I bite racists.” There are plenty of pet-friendly places to stay on the Cape. Pamper your pooch at the upscale resort Chatham Bars Inn or try “roughing it” with your pooch at Nickerson State Park’s campground.

For a relaxing beach getaway with your dog, check out Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Five miles south of Portland, it’s a great place to get away from it all, but not too far off the beaten path. Of course you can’t come to Maine without trying a local lobster roll, and Maine’s Bit has an outdoor food truck in the park with pet-friendly picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular spot for puppies to play in the sand and splash in the water. After a long day of fun in the sun, relax at Inn by the Sea, a luxury beachfront resort that offers extra entertainment for pets and their owners.

The city has dog-friendly patios, including hot breakfast joint Black-Eyed Susan’s and eclectic American bistro Queequegin’s. Relax for a while under the brass chandelier in the quiet bed, and breakfast welcomes four-legged friends in select rooms for a nominal fee.

This extremely dog-friendly town in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is a must-see. Known as the Ski Capital of the East, Stowe draws visitors from nearby to the world-class resort every winter. But with plenty of outdoor activities in every season, Stowe is a great place to vacation with your dog.

For a big-time adventure, Smugglers Notch State Park offers miles of hiking through a stunning section of the Green Mountains. For something more low-key (but fun), you and your dog will love a walk along the Stowe Recreational Trail. This 11-mile walking trail is lined with dog-friendly restaurants and roadside breweries. There are plenty of dog-friendly places to stay in the area for every budget. Luxury resorts like Trapp Family Lodge, Topnotch Resort, and The Lodge at Spruce Peak offer creature comforts. But if you’re looking for something more affordable, consider staying with your dog at the Field Guide Lodge or The Stowhof.

Jekyll Island Dog Friendly Guide

National parks are great places to be with dogs, and Acadia National Park is one of the best. There are more than 100 miles of trails to explore, and a free, dog-friendly bus takes hikers around the park and island.

Check out trails like the Precipice Trail, the Champlain Mountain & Beehive Loop Trail, and the Gorham Mountain Trail. Campgrounds like Blackwoods and Seawall accept pets for overnight trips. Just outside the national park boundary is Little Long Pond, a 1,000-acre park where dogs can run free.

There is a restaurant inside the park, and good news – pets are welcome! Since 1893, visitors to Acadia National Park have lined up for the spectacular views and popovers at the Jordan Pond House. If you’re visiting in summer, don’t miss ‘Tea on the Lawn’, a delightful tradition that goes back a long way. 40 years.

Travelers with the comfort of their pets in mind may want to consider a few days on Cape Cod when planning their New England road trip. Bar Harbor ranks high on the pet-friendly list. Things to do are packed (see #1), starting with a hike in Acadia National Park. Relax together on a two-hour guided boat tour of Frenchman Bay with spectacular views of the Maine coastline, Acadia National Park, and the Frenchman Bay Islands.
