A Dog Friendly Guide To Loch Lomond [2024]
Thanks to the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, you and your dog have the right to walk anywhere in Scotland as long as you comply with the Scottish Outdoors Code. From vast fields and lush forests to rolling hills and sandy beaches, Scotland’s stunning scenery will tantalize your dog’s senses. Here are some rugged options for traveling with dogs:
1. Watch the salmon leap at Dunkeld’s Hermitage and Black Lynn Falls, where you and your dog can enjoy a scenic walk past Britain’s tallest Douglas fir.
2. Explore Scotland’s first national park on a walk with your dog. Explore Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park in many ways, but keep your dog under control.
3. For an adventure trip with dogs, visit the Isle of Arran, home to the UK’s only dog park. Brodick Castle, Garden & Country Park is a great place for dog walking and dogs are allowed in the garden.

4. Admire the plants and flowers of Aberdeen’s Victoria and Westbourne Parks, which are not only great for dog walking, but are right next to each other so you could spend a whole day there.
5. Stroll through the former home of the late Queen Mother, May Castle and gardens. If your dog needs a break or you want to go somewhere you can’t bring your pet, the forest also has a shaded dog park.

For over a decade, the Scottish Highlands have been at the top of my travel bucket list. When we were visiting my parents in Paris for a few days, we decided to visit the UK before it became more difficult to travel with a dog to the UK after Brexit.
For outdoor enthusiasts like myself, this area really is the adventure capital of the UK, with plenty of trails, ski areas and waterways just to explore. And don’t miss the chance to see the Loch Ness Monster!
Day Scottish Highlands Road Trip Itinerary
The Highlands comprise rugged and sparsely populated areas in the north and north-west of Scotland. We only covered a small part of the area on our short trip and I’m planning our next trip to explore places we missed such as the Outer Hebrides, Isle of Skye and the Orkney Islands.
We loved the dog friendly trails and pubs and especially appreciated the Scottish road laws. Also known as ScotWays, these rights allow all human (and in many cases canine) users of land and waterways, even privately owned, to act responsibly.
We visited Fort William Glencoe Mountain Resort a few days before the Mountain Bike World Cup. One of the most prestigious mountain bike events in the world, the city’s population will grow from 10,000 to 30,000.
This area of Scotland offers some of the best mountain biking in the world. Endless trails, forest trails and mountain terrain should put this country at the top of any mountain biker’s dream destination list. You can hit all the trails while planning your trip with this hiking board trail map.
Ultimate 7 Day Scotland Itinerary: Epic Castles And Highlands
Fortunately for beginners, there are ways for all levels. We decided on something more casual for our walk. We have our rides from Off Beat Bikes, which offers a variety of bike rentals to suit all abilities and types of fun.
The experienced staff helped us choose between several routes, gave us a map, set up our bikes and sent us on our way. As this was Laila’s first and our first rides, we stuck to the easy gravel road known as the Gairlochy Loop. I wouldn’t call it a mountain bike, but it gave us a taste of what Laila could do (and she did it great!).
Running is the main attraction for me in this beautiful part of Scotland. I have wanted to travel here for a long time. Unfortunately the weather and conditions didn’t allow us to go out as I would have liked, but we managed to run well.
The tourism board put us in touch with Sarah Belshaw who showed us the local trails. She is an experienced mountain runner and the founder of Rannsaich, a company that combines swimming and running, mindfulness and healthy eating. Sarah knows the area very well and talked back and forth about all the trails we could do. Made me promise to come back for an adventure with Rannsaich!
Pet Friendly Holidays, Dog Friendly Breaks & More
After paddling around the world, Rugged Paddle Board owners Rob Kingslad and Keren Smail return to the UK to present Glencoe from the water.
We donned wetsuits and boots and headed for the tranquil Glencoe Lochen, a small lake surrounded by mountains. Depending on your paddling experience level, Rugged Paddle offers lessons, a short 1-2 hour trip, or a full day trip exploring the area on SUP. Alternatively, you can hire your own table and go wherever you want.
As a bonus for all those traveling with dogs, Signal Rock Cottage, Rugged Paddle make their home dog friendly for a very reasonable fee of £2.50 per day.
