Autumn is the best time to take the high paths for picture-worthy views.
Northern Indiana’s Amish country has plenty of pet-friendly things to do, from locally owned shops to beautiful parks and trails. Try Shipshewana Trading Place, where leashed pups are welcome to see the Midwest’s largest flea market right next to you. A word of caution: After a weekend learning about the Amish lifestyle, you may find it difficult to return to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Papper is here for the beer, and there’s no better place than Milwaukee. Extremely pet-friendly, you’ll have a hard time convincing Fido to come back to Chicago with you. Stay a while at one of their many pet-friendly hotels, but the boutique Kimpton Journeyman offers spectacular river views, no extra pet fee, and a leash to keep him comfortable.

Rich in history and the site of Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home, Lincoln State Park features more than 10 miles of hiking trails, rolling hills, and two lakes. Dogs are welcome to visit this state park with you. You can visit the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, a pioneer farm, the site of Lincoln’s Cabin, the grave of Abraham Lincoln’s mother, and the historic Trail of Twelve Stones. Stay all day? You can camp at this state park! It is great for overnight stays.

In our six-plus years of RV travel with pets, when I think of the one place that has surprised me the most, it’s down to the chalk pyramids in Kansas. Many travelers don’t know about this destination, but now the secret is out! The monument is located on the western edge of Gove County, Kansas. It is a series of large chalk monoliths called the Chalk Pyramids. Dogs are allowed on leashes and you’ll feel like you’re on another planet. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
Originally from Florida, we love living at the beach! But after visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with Brickle and Digby, I can now understand lake life! Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features sandy beaches and cliffs overlooking Lake Michigan. Like many areas, there are some beaches where dogs are not allowed, so check with the park’s friendly staff, get a map or look online. We found that Brickell and Digby had more places to visit on this beautiful lake than we expected. But keep in mind that dogs are not allowed on the dunes for safety reasons.
When you take your dog to Bemidji, Minnesota he’ll feel as high as Paul Bunyan! This was a very interesting stop on our journey. Meet the giant statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox for a great photo opportunity. This roadside attraction has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. Paul Bunyan and his baby Blue Ox, built in 1937, stand on the shore of Lake Bemidji near the Tourist Information Center. After taking the best photos ever of your dog, head to nearby dog-friendly Itasca State Park. Here, you can see the source of the Mississippi River, go hiking, and have a picnic!
Named for the large sandstone cave within the park, Indian Cave State Park is bordered by the mighty Missouri River. Your dog will thank you for taking him camping, picnicking, and hiking 22 miles here! The main geological feature of the park is Indian Cave, which contains prehistoric Native American petroglyphs!
