If you could ask Albie’s favorite beach, I think it’s Saunton Sands along the North Devon coast. With a three and a half kilometer wide sandy beach, it is the perfect place to take your dog and the family on a day out. If the beach isn’t impressive enough, it is. It is also created by Braunton Burrows, one of the largest sand dunes in Britain. Some are 30 meters high. If your dog is anything like mine, he will quickly tire of walking up and down the dunes, so you can enjoy a peaceful evening after exploring. Of The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In Anglesey
Soar Mill Cove is one of those special beaches that is like a local secret. Only accessible on foot or by boat, it is less crowded and a place for hikers and four-legged friends. There is never a bad time to visit this beach. At low tide, golden sands and hidden rock pools emerge, perfect for swimming or paddle boarding in the crystal clear waters. Albie and I often stop at the Bolberry Down National Trust car park and walk the mile long path enjoying the view as usual. You can park at Soar Mill Cove Hotel and take the 15 minute walk to the beach, or take the return route for the seven mile walk from Salcombe. You may be lucky enough to see the Highland cattle roaming the hilltops. They are gentle monsters, but be sure to keep your dog under control when you pass them.
Mill Bay is secluded in woodland in the South Devon AONB with stunning views over the Jade waters of Salcombe Bay. This sheltered cove is rich in soft golden sand, perfect for a day out in the sun or for playing. There is a National Trust car park on the beach but this is only for a short time but fills up in early summer. The easiest way to get there is by taking the East Portlemouth ferry which runs regularly from Jubilee Pier in Salcombe. After this, it is easy to walk along the coastal road, but you can walk along the beach at low tide.
One of our favorite beaches on the North Devon coast is Sandy Cove. Lying on this quiet little sandy beach and looking out to sea and Lee Bay with the cliffs above you, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Thailand or Hawaii instead of Devon. The bay is accessible via steep wooden steps from the coastal path or at high tide from Lee Bay. This coastline is steeped in history, with Sandy Cove and Lee Bay notorious for smuggling. Low water reveals caves and rock pools that Albie likes to explore.
It wouldn’t be right to make a list of the best beaches in Devon without including Woolacombe. The three kilometer stretch of golden sand has won numerous awards year after year, making it popular with surfers; It’s easy to see why it attracts thousands of families and dogs. There are certain parts of the beach where the dog will guide you. But the large size means that even in the height of summer, the dog can always find a place to relax and have a good run. Woolacombe town has a great atmosphere and is a great day out for all the family with plenty of dog friendly restaurants.
