From campsites to holiday apartments and beach houses, here are some of my favorite places to stay in South East QLD. Living in Brisbane during the Covid restrictions and closed borders was an opportunity for us to travel more locally. And local travel meant that our Great Dane pickles were always included in our travel plans. AS I PROMISED

I’m Sasha, Great Dane mom and owner of Arctic Mist. A few years ago, no more than a few months would pass without an international holiday. But times have changed and in recent years we have been on many local trips with our Great Dane Pickle, particularly in South East QLD. Sadly, Pickle passed away last year. But recently we welcomed a Great Dane puppy, Pumpkin, into our family. She follows in Pickle’s footsteps and joins us on many adventures.

Dog Friendly Travel

So I thought I’d share some of my favorite dog-friendly places to stay in South East QLD, including things to do and accommodation links.

But before we go any further, if you haven’t traveled with your dog before and don’t know where to start, check out my blog at

There are plenty of dog friendly campsites in Australia and Hip Camp is a good place to start. You can enter the number of animals in your search and the results will only show animal selections.

One of my favorite campsites for dogs is Gordon Country in the Goomburra Valley. It is located above the Cunninghams Gap between Aratula and Warwick, just over 2 hours drive from Brisbane. We have lived here several times and started going there years ago (long before Pickle’s time) when it was just a cow farm with no facilities. It has changed a lot over the years and now has facilities, glamping sites and lodges.

Dog Friendly Vacations On The East Coast

Although the property and camp areas are dog friendly, they do not allow dogs in the cabins (only the fenced yard and porches). We have never stayed in a cabin for this reason. If you go outside of school/public holidays, you’ll probably find a place to yourself along the lake. To find the best campsites, however, you need a 4WD. Access to Gordon Country is by dirt road and there are areas near the entrance and the office that can be reached without a 4WD.

Dogs can be off leash, which is great. But note that there are free range cattle and donkeys on the property. We like to go to relax around the fire, but there are plenty of 4WD and hiking trails. If you don’t mind the cold, you can swim in the lake, and if you go in winter, take all your warmest clothes, it gets very cold!

There are many different campsites on North Strathbroke Island. Dog rules seem to change constantly, so it’s best to check the Stradbroke Island website for the latest information on dog-friendly campsites and beaches. Stradbroke Island is a 45 minute ferry ride from Cleveland. There is public transport on Stradbroke Island, but if you are taking your dog, I recommend taking your car on the ferry. Note that dogs must be muzzled to leave the boat. There are also dog friendly holiday homes on Stradbroke Island, see below for more details.

If you are looking for a holiday home/apartment, Holidays with Dogs is a great website to find accommodation for dogs. Each property lists pet-friendly features, such as whether the property is fenced, whether dogs are allowed inside, and whether they provide things like dog beds, bowls, and beer bags.

England: Dog Friendly Places To Visit In The North East

Be sure to read the terms and conditions as some places only allow outside dogs or dogs up to a certain size

. If the conditions are not clear, contact the accommodation provider before booking. Better to be clear in advance than to have problems in the middle of your holiday!

Also make sure the layout of the place is suitable ie. if your dog is comfortable with stairs or a lift, if there is a fenced garden or a place for your dog to do his work. If you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to get in touch with a question.

We stayed in a lovely 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment (Perfect Alex Beach Pad) in Alexandra Head, just north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It is located on the second floor and there is a staircase to access the apartment. In any case, there is a large terrace with a beautiful view, so you do not feel in an apartment. Dogs are allowed inside, but not on the furniture or in the communal pool area.

It is a short walk from Headland and Maoolaba. There are many dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating along the Mooloolaba esplanade, as well as sunset markets every 1.

Mooloolaba Beach is not dog friendly. However, Alexandra Headland Beach is dog friendly on a leash and there are many other dog friendly beaches within walking distance.

Noosa Avalon Cottages is situated on a 30 hectare property 5 minutes from Pomona and approximately 30 minutes drive from Noosa. There are 5 detached houses on the property, ranging from a 1 bedroom cottage to a 3 bedroom house. They are all dog friendly and allow dogs inside. We stayed in the Kangaroo Lodge, which has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. The villa is really cute, has a large living area with beautiful views and a great spa. The beds are small (double) but I still recommend it for a nice and relaxing weekend.

Some of the houses have decks that are safe for your dog. Kangaroo Lodge has a fenced garden, but the fence is to keep out the cows, not the dogs. But it was fine for our Dána Mór. The property is beautiful for walking, with native gardens and plenty of wildlife and birds, as well as free-roaming cattle, so you may need to keep your dogs on a lead.

Pomona is a small country town with many restaurants, cafes and an IGA supermarket. On Saturday mornings there are local dog friendly markets in Stan Topper Park. They have lots of handicrafts/local artisans, as well as food stalls.

Toowoomba is QLD’s largest inland city and is known as the Garden City. Many people visit in the spring for the iconic Carnival of Flowers. It is a very beautiful city with many parks and gardens to explore.

We have been to Toowoomba many times. My favorite place to stay is the Cozy Cat Cottage in the City of Toowoomba. This is a very cute renovated Queenslander 3 bedroom cottage. It is one of three original workhouses listed on the Heritage Trail. This character-listed villa retains all the details and atmosphere of its heritage charm, but has been renovated to provide modern comfort. There are 2 double bedrooms downstairs and a loft with 2 single beds suitable for children. There is 1 bathroom with a large tub, an electric fireplace in the living room, and a kennel on the back porch suitable for small / medium sized dogs. The yard is fully fenced, but there are stairs from the back deck to get into the yard.

Dogs are allowed inside the villa, but not in the carpeted bedrooms or on the sofas. The bathroom and kitchen were well stocked and there were even dog biscuits for us when we arrived! The hosts Janice and Michael were lovely. We will definitely be back.

Mujimba is a quiet beach suburb on the Sunshine Coast, close to the Sunshine Coast Airport. There is a beautiful esplanade park that runs along Mujimba beach which is dog friendly. North Shore Dog Beach, south of Mujimba in Twin Waters, is one of the best dog beaches on the Sunshine Coast.

Mudjimba holiday properties have many pet friendly accommodation options and Kirsty was great to deal with. We stayed in a beautiful 4 bedroom house on the esplanade across the street from the park. We went with the family and had 2 dogs with us (our Great Dane and a large family member’s dog). Dogs were allowed in the house, but not on the furniture.

There is a nice Italian restaurant and cafe on the esplanade with outdoor seating for dogs.

If you have a boat or love the ocean, Hervey Bay is a must! We went with friends and stayed at “The Sandpiper”, a lovely 4 bedroom house in Craneish, just 10 minutes north of central Hervey Bay. Craignish is a quiet residential area but it was perfect for us as it has a large garden for the kids and the dog and plenty of space to park the boat. The house has everything you could need, incl
