We left Melbourne late in the evening. 4 hours later we were on the Alpine Highway and headed for Buckland Valley; When you first arrive at the central circuit your options are Porpunkah, Bright, Buckland Valley or Mount Buffalo. Buckland Valley is a scenic drive from traditional holiday destinations. The campsite is easily accessible by two-wheeled vehicle; You will have to drive slowly as you progress and find a loose gravel road under your wheels.

We arrived late at Buckland Valley and continued following the map to reach the Ah Youngs camp. This place is a big open space with beautiful tall trees like a building in the city. We knew we had found our destination; When we entered the camp from the road we could see nothing; It was pitch black, but all we could see were campfires burning in other people’s campsites. It was a welcome sight after a long dark journey.
The native birds that live in the area will keep your ears open at all times. In the middle of the night we heard the buzz of a chainsaw. It sounded like someone was cutting down a tree, and that went on for a while. Was it strange to imagine someone doing such a job in the middle of the night? The next day, after talking to some of the locals at the camp, they explained that there was a lyrebird in the area. In the morning it was a sound to be heard, the roosters crowing like mad birds. We love them, and the kookaburras go to the forest if there is a party in the trees near us (I was in my element), and so do the boys, the smell of the forest, the sound of the wind passing through the pine needles, you can smell the river and want to go. Literally 2 minutes walk down the hill and the river is on your doorstep.
It is a dog friendly camp that borders the national forest. The Buckland River runs alongside and offers swimming holes where you can swim on hot summer days. It is an open area with plenty of space to pitch your tent away from others.
